Three Dogs, Three Stories, One Drawing

•

Always an accomplishment — and a challenge — when I can get multiple dogs into a single frame. Three full-bodied pups at that!

Drawn on A3, I was a little apprehensive when I was presented with separate photos for this piece. Casper, the Rough Collie (or Long-haired Collie) and Princess, the Beagle, have both long crossed the “rainbow bridge”. And then there’s Patches, a shaggy Beagle and Shih Tzu cross, also known as a Bea-Tzu.

I’ve only met Princess and Patches personally, but they were more than happy to fill me in on what Casper was like. Yes, I “hear” voices when I’m drawing these cute doggies. Imagine the chatter that went on as each pup slowly came to life!

I don’t normally include a background tint, but I felt this one needed something to make each pup really “shine”. Technically, backgrounds should be completed before the actual subjects are drawn. But I’m a rule-breaker — not always proud of it — and once the dogs were drawn, they all had opinions about what would work.

It didn’t take long before we all agreed on the shade of olive green.

And now, we wait.

Wait for them to be framed, then sent off to tell their story to whoever happens to see them.

Three dogs. Three personalities. One drawing. And, apparently, quite a bit of conversation along the way.
