Can you combine pets from different photos?
Absolutely!
Sometimes our furry family members refuse to sit still together—or perhaps they’ve never actually met. As long as the reference photos are clear, high-quality, and have reasonably similar lighting and proportions, I can combine them into a single portrait that looks natural.
If I’m unsure whether the photos will work well together, I’ll let you know before we begin.
Can you draw pets that have passed away?
Yes… and it would be an honour.
I’ve created a number of memorial portraits over the years, and I understand just how special these commissions are. My goal is to create something that celebrates your beloved companion and preserves the little expressions and personality traits you’ll always remember.
How long does it take to finish a portrait?
As long as it takes… 😄
But seriously, most portraits take several weeks to complete.
Every portrait is built up using many layers of coloured pencil to achieve a realistic finish, so it’s a slower (but very rewarding) process than painting with a brush.
The exact timeframe depends on the size of the portrait, the level of detail, and the quality of the reference photo.
If you’re commissioning a portrait for a birthday, anniversary, Christmas, or another special occasion, just let me know. I’ll always do my best to work within your timeline.
What if I don’t have a high-quality photo?
A clear reference photo will always produce the best portrait.
If your favourite photo isn’t quite ideal, I may be able to enhance it using photo editing tools. However, it’s worth noting that enhancements can sometimes alter colours or soften important details.
If possible, send me a few different photos. Together, we’ll choose the one that gives us the best starting point.
Can you draw people with pets?
Certainly!
While I admit I have a soft spot for portraits where the pet gets to be the star of the show, I’m more than happy to include people as well.
Whether it’s a family portrait, a child with their best friend, or someone sharing a quiet moment with a much-loved companion, I’d be delighted to create it.
Can I commission a portrait as a surprise gift?
Absolutely! In fact, I think they’re some of the most meaningful gifts you can give.
The biggest challenge is usually getting hold of a great reference photo without giving the surprise away. Here are a few tried-and-tested ideas:
The “Scrapbook” Trick
Tell them you’re putting together a scrapbook, calendar, or photo album and ask for their favourite high-resolution photo of their pet.
The “Just for Fun” Art Project
Tell them you’re experimenting with digital art, trying an AI art app, or practising sketching and ask if you can borrow one of their favourite pet photos.
Recruit an Accomplice
Partners, siblings, close friends, or even the dog walker often have access to fantastic, high-resolution photos—and they’re usually more than happy to help keep the secret.
The Innocent Photo Request
Simply ask:
“I’m looking for a cute photo of your pup for a wallpaper (or a little sketch I’m thinking of doing). Could you send me your top three favourites?”
Dog owners rarely need much encouragement to share photos of their beloved companions!
